Announcing the English Translation of Pampa Bhārata

Admin

At karṇāṭa: Centre for Classical Kannada, we are proud to announce the ongoing English translation of Pampa Bhārata, one of the most celebrated works of Kannada literature. Written in the 10th century by Ādikavi Pampa, this epic—also known as Vikramārjuna Vijaya—reimagines the Mahābhārata, portraying Arjuna as an idealized hero while subtly drawing parallels between him and Pampa’s patron, the Rāṣṭrakūṭa king Arikēsari. More than just a retelling, Pampa Bhārata is a literary and philosophical masterpiece, reflecting Jain ideals, moral dilemmas, and the poet’s deep erudition. Its influence on Kannada poetry has been profound, setting a high standard for later poets and earning Pampa a revered place in Kannada literary history.

Despite its historical and literary significance, Pampa Bhārata has remained largely inaccessible to non-Kannada readers. This translation project aims to bridge that gap, making the work available to a wider audience while preserving its poetic and cultural essence. The translation is being undertaken by three eminent scholars: R.V.S. Sundaram, a distinguished writer and translator known for his translations of classical Kannada texts; D.A. Shankar, an esteemed academic with deep expertise in Indian and Western literary traditions; and Lakshminarayana Arora, an accomplished translator with a keen sensitivity to linguistic and poetic nuances. Together, their combined scholarship ensures a nuanced and faithful rendering of Pampa’s work.

Translating Pampa Bhārata is a complex task, given the poet’s intricate style, rich use of śleṣa (wordplay), and philosophical depth. Pampa’s verses are not merely descriptive but carry layers of meaning, often requiring interpretative insight. The translators are committed to retaining the beauty and rhythm of the original while making it accessible to contemporary readers.

This project is currently underway and is expected to be completed within one or two years. Once published, it will provide scholars, students, and enthusiasts of Indian literature an opportunity to engage with one of the greatest works of old Kannada poetry.

At karṇāṭa, we see this initiative as part of our broader mission to preserve and promote the classical literary heritage of Karnataka.
