Start of the Classical Kannada Database Project

The Classical Kannada Database Project represents the inaugural initiative of karṇāṭa. This ambitious project seeks to compile a comprehensive digital catalogue of Kannada literature spanning from the 9th to the 19th century, something akin to the Pandit Project dedicated to Sanskrit literature. The database aims to meticulously list the names of authors, their works, and the dates of these works, along with the listing of genre, meter, form, and structure of each work. Furthermore, the work will be categorized according to disciplines, patrons, and religious affiliations, with additional commentary on the distinctive qualities of each work.

Despite the availability of this information in various Kannada encyclopaedias, the creation of a digital listing complemented by an intuitive interface promises to significantly enhance the resources available to scholars and enthusiasts alike. The project will benefit from the expertise of three distinguished Kannada scholars:

C.S. Poornima, who is affiliated with the University of Mysore as a translation studies instructor and has contributed to the translation of Kannada works into English. Besides her academic pursuits, she is involved in programming at All India Radio.

B. Venkataramanna, who teaches history for the students of M.A. in South Indian Studies and has worked on South Indian history and comparative literature.

Under the guidance and supervision of RVS Sundaram, this project is slated for completion over a span of three years, setting a precedent for the digital preservation and accessibility of classical Kannada literature.
